Sharpe worked as a pharmaceutical sales representative for 10 years then trained in a program that used quality assurance methods to improve manufacturing processes and other operations. His last project involved implementing a global due diligence process and its success paved his entry into ethics and compliance at Eli Lilly. He also trains the sales team to respond effectively and ethically to requests from customers. "Our focus is on ensuring that all our employees understand that this is greater than just following a set of rules --- it's the right thing to do and is in the best interests of customers and patients." He plans to bring employees from across the business into an ethics and compliance role for a period so they can return to their roles and champion the ethics culture they've absorbed. Compliance approaches Dr Creek, who has a medical background, says compliance ha sn't taken away from creativity. "Anything we do in the compliance sphere has to give confidence in the results and quality of product," he says. "Bearing in mind it is to be used in very sick patients at the sharp end of medicine, the risk of something going wrong is too tough to contemplate.
