GRC Professional : GRC Winter 2012
4 GrC Professional • winter 2012 WELCOME TO THE WINTER EDITION OF GRC PROFESSIONAL. As you read this magazine, ACI continues to represent your interests not just on the national stage, but internationally as we seek to bring attention to the vital role that you play in supporting your organisations to grow and thrive. Recently I represented ACI at a forum hosted by the Commonwealth Attorney-General’s Department on the proposed National Anti-Corruption Plan. You can read the story on page 7. Put simply, we believe there is a long way to go before this national plan will be ready for implementation in a manner that addresses the needs of both the private and public sectors. While our advocacy work is vital in raising the profile of GRC professionals, we also seek to serve members by providing opportunities to learn. Our inaugural GRC 2012 conference is fast approaching. If you haven’t already registered, now is the time to do so. Join more than 600 GRC professionals in a unique regional event tailored specifically to you, with streams covering finance and insurance, governance and ethics, risk, and banking. (For more information, see page 6.) This conference, held jointly with RMIA, is an indication of the changing nature of compliance and risk, with many professionals requiring broader skills than ever before. This breadth is highlighted by the stories in this edition of GRC Professional, which reflects the growing maturity of compliance in industry sectors including retail, environmental compliance and tertiary education. We also look at continuous disclosure requirements, which have lately made headlines due to a failed takeover bid of department chain David Jones (see page 18 for more). Finally, we look at the risks posed by the growth of portable communications technologies, including smart phones and tablets. (Page 30) I trust you enjoy this edition of GRC Professional and the ACI team appreciates all of the positive feedback we have received from our members on past editions. We look forward to continuing to support you and your organisations. Martin Tolar CCP, Managing Director, ACI Your voice on issues that matter MD’S MESSAGE
