GRC Professional : GRC Spring 2011
40 grc professional • Spring 2011 40 grc professional • Spring 2011 end note my career Grc Professional asked annette donslaar, consultant (asia/Pacific region) about her career so far. » What was your first job? After I left university, my first job was a graduate management trainee at Myer. It was a great grounding in listening to people, resolving problems and learning how to stand on your feet for up to 12 hours a day! » how did you get involved in compliance? My first job in compliance was not a conventional one – it was as a commissioned officer in the Royal Australian Air Force. I was a Flight Lieutenant in the Adminstrative Category – which was a mixture of HR, Compliance and Legal. It was my role to ensure that military orders were complied with. After I left the RAAF I joined the (then) Banking Industry Ombudsman Office, which had just come into operation. Once again I had to look at whether bank policies and the law had been complied with. Since that time, I have spent the last 20 years working in compliance roles as a regulator, industry advocate and in-house specialist – both in Australia and overseas. » What was your hardest day at work? My hardest day at work was organising a military funeral for a RAAF pilot who had crashed into the ocean. I cried for days. » What was the best moment of satisfaction in your work? Working in Asia has been the most satisfying part of my career so far. Compliance is an emerging profession and staff (both compliance and the business) are hungry for skills and training to help them improve and embed best practice into the organisation. » What tips would you give to governance, risk and compliance managers to take their career to the next level? Get involved in the business you support and your profession. Think broadly, be innovative and speak boldly. GRC roles have taken me across Australia and around the world. I have achieved this by being active with ACI and being prepared to take risks with the roles presented to me. But above all, be flexible in your approach and have fun at work! Annette donslAAR says the best thing about her job, after an already long career in compliance, is training compliance managers in emerging Asian regions. did you receive the gRC Professional enewsletter?
