29 Responsible gaming Responsible gaming is one of the largest considerations of the Tabcorp Regulatory and Compliance team and underpins every aspect of the Tabcorp business. Working around the different state requirements and requests can often present its own challenges. “ Every state and territory has different requirements with regards to the responsible gambling messages that it wants on gambling advertising and those messages change again depending on if the advertising appears in print, TV, radio or the internet,” Ziino says. “ It can get very complicated to make sure that we are certain we are following all the right regulations across the right states and territories. There is currently no national standard for responsible gambling messages and so we have interpreted the regulations and come up with our own responsible gambling message that is applicable across all states and territories – but it can only be used if we are advertising nationally. If we are advertising in a specific state or territory we need to ensure we have the right message for that state or territory. “T here are betting laws we have to comply with such as when bets can be placed, cancelled and how particular events are handled. For example cricket is different to football and that creates different compliance requirements and regulatory conditions. ” Ziino says Regulatory and Compliance have also taken on the responsibility of checking all advertising and marketing even before they are put to the legal department to make sure they are fully compliant, not just with regulatory processes and requirements, but also to make sure that the ads reflect the company’s commitment to responsible gambling. “ We have taken on the job of sanity checking advertising and marketing. One of the first things we did was introduce a formal marketing and advertising sign-off program that ensured the involvement of the Regulatory and Compliance team,” she says. “In addition, my team plays a major role in product development. Nothing starts until we look it from all the different angles: is this something that the regulator will approve? What process do we need to follow to gain that approval? What would the community think about it? At Tabcorp we are very focused on making sure that what we do is beneficial for everyone and most of all reflects our commitment to responsible gambling.” ••• tabcorp separates its responsible gaming activities into three distinct categories, outlined in the diagram above nothing starts until we look it from all the different angles: is this something that the regulator will approve?
