It also sets out an acceptable practice for verifying the name and date of birth of customers who have been assessed as low to medium risk. Although the code is not mandator y, it constitutes a ‘safe harbour’ – a reporting entity in New Zealand that fully complies with the code is deemed to be compliant with relevant parts of the legislation. PRoduCt sAFetY ACCC receives 911 product safety reports The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) received 911 mandatory reports during the first six months of this year under new consumer laws. Under the Australian Consumer Law, businesses must notify the ACCC within two days if they become aware that a product they have supplied has caused or may have caused serious injury, illness or death. The laws apply to anyone in the business of selling, exchanging, leasing, hiring or hire-purchasing of goods, or the granting or conferring of product-related services such as repair or installation. Approximately 40 per cent of reports have come from retailers, 40 per cent from manufacturers and 20 per cent from other suppliers. Amanda Atherton Compliance Sydney THE SR GROUP . BREWER MORRIS .
